It is perhaps New Zealand’s most identifiable butterfly, but the monarch is in decline and the cause could be the swan plants people buy to attract them.
The global population of monarchs has declined by 80% and experts fear the figures could be similar across Aotearoa.

Tiny pieces of plastic have for the first time been found floating in New Zealand’s air, sparking concerns about whether it may be harming people as they breathe it in.
While overseas studies have detected the presence of airborne microplastics, this is the first time they have been shown to exist in this country.
The findings came from research by the University of Canterbury and the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) scientists, and were published in the Water, Air, and Soil Pollution journal.
Experts consider plastic pollution as one of the most pressing environmental problems. Unfortunately, existing studies on microplastics – tiny pieces of plastic – have primarily focused on their impacts on rivers and oceans.
Now, a study led by researchers from Utah State University (USU) and Cornell University revealed that microplastics “spiral around the globe” in the atmosphere.
In fact, microplastics can linger in the air for up to a week, which is more than enough time for them to “travel” across entire continents. “The atmosphere is one of the reasons why microplastics are so widespread,” said study lead author Janice Brahney, an assistant professor of natural resources at USU.

RANGITIKEI ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH WATCH
On Tuesday 10th April 2016 as I left home around 10:30am I spotted a fibrous white looking webby thing floating down in the wind. I managed to capture & photograph it. I have seen these before on several occasions in my town of Marton in NZ. Below are the images, and apologies, the quality is not good as I don’t have my good camera at present.
That evening I received several photographs (pictured below) from a local person who had also seen these, and many more, hanging from power lines and flying through the air. One other local person has also reported seeing these in the same vicinity.
Here below is a video of those I captured in May 2014.
Note these webs are generally explained away as spider webs or other natural phenomena. However people who have had these lab tested have found contents which don’t exactly affirm the spider explanation, and which advise caution in handling.

In fact, the fibers looked so ominous that Snow even opted not to touch them with her “bare hands” and collected them on “white pieces of paper”.
Soon after, Snow, determined to know the truth, contacted her local news station, KPHO, CBS 5, inviting them to investigate her fibrous discovery.

Marton is in the lower. North Island of New Zealand. Recently there have been reported sightings of fibres falling in other parts of NZ as well. They’ve also been seen world wide. (See links below).
I first saw these on 1 May 2014 and thereafter on the next day, again on the 11th and have seen them regularly ever since, particularly on clear days. This may be because the sun then reflects on them in which case they could be there every day. Whilst observing them I saw two what looked like military aircraft fly over within minutes of each other. Later in the day there was heavy geoengineering over town and a further aircraft sighting which was a Hercules. It’s not uncommon to see military aircraft here as there is a Defense Base nearby.

I’ve observed this activity for 2 and a half years now, both here and in Palmerston North. People observe them daily throughout NZ, including fibers or filaments. I have collected samples however laboratory testing is generally cost prohibitive.
The HR2977 document (see Sec 7) describes geoengineering trails (US Congress calls them ‘chemtrails’) as ‘exotic weapons system’.
Some people whose videos are uploaded on YT have had similar fibers or filaments tested by a laboratory. One common comment was ‘unknown, manmade plant life’.

For each of these four (4) samples, two (2) thermal desorption experiments were carried out at 445 ° C, first directly and on the other hand with in-situ methylation (promoting the detection process of the polar component may be present).
Different organic compounds generated in these eight (8) experiences have each time been separated by gas chromatography and identified by mass spectrometry.

Among the detected components are numerous molecules commonly found in the composition of fuels and lubricants aircraft engine .
The four (4 ) samples of “atmospheric filaments ” subject to this study contain toxic aromatic compounds (phthalates ) and heterocyclic compounds of concern , and three of them contain DEHP , a particular concern representative of the family phthalates (due to its endocrine disrupting properties ) .
All organic molecules and highlighted in the composition of the analyzed “atmospheric filaments ” are problematic, as in terms of public health and their environmental impact.
Given the increasing global nature of air traffic, if these ” atmospheric filaments ” result – as we believe – in recombination phenomena in altitude releases of aviation engines, the results of this study constitute us as a sufficient to inform the general public of this form of air pollution because, so far totally ignored the Scientific communit.
