Huge scandal in Poland sparks major crisis with Germany
A diplomatic row has erupted between Germany and Poland after the revelation of a huge Polish scandal aimed at illegally granting 250,000 to 400,000 visas to people from Asian and African countries.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has threatened Poland with reintroducing border controls amid the visa scandal and called on Polish authorities to investigate the matter and clear up the charges as soon as possible.
During a Social Democrats campaign event in Nuremberg, Chancellor Scholz said he did not want Poland to “just wave migrants around”.
At the same time, Scholz stressed that Germany may decide to take measures at its borders, including the reintroduction of border controls to stem the flow of illegal immigrants:

Huge scandal in Poland with visas to foreigners from Asia and Africa
A residence permit scandal that reaches all the way up the government has fueled the campaign for Poland’s October parliamentary election, with the opposition accusing the government of bringing in “hundreds of thousands of migrants” from Africa and the Middle East . East.

Media sources say the deputy minister and his associates sent consulates lists of hundreds of names of people who should be granted visas quickly, often without following verification procedures.
The website Onet.pl specifically reported cases of Indians who posed as Bollywood stars and, with the intervention of the aforementioned deputy minister, received visas to enter the Schengen area.
The same website also writes that the Polish authorities were informed about the case by the intelligence services of other countries, which, however, is denied by the Polish government.
The undersecretary reportedly authored an executive order that would pave the way for at least 400,000 visas to be granted to people from Asian and African countries.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s ruling nationalist populist Law and Justice (PiS) party attempted to downplay the issue. Officials told him the case only involved “a few hundred visas”.
Prosecutors, who are investigating this “unfair exercise of influence”, said seven people have been arrested, but none of them are government officials.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs admitted that “irregularities were observed in the process of issuing visas” and announced that the head of the legal service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had resigned.
On October 15, alongside the elections, a referendum on immigration is to be held in Poland. Poles are being asked to say whether they want “the wall on the border with Belarus to be removed” and whether they are in favor of “thousands of illegal immigrants” entering their country under the EU’s relocation mechanism.
After the scandal was revealed, the opposition did not mince its words and spoke of a “visa mafia”.
In a video posted online, the liberal Citizens Platform accuses the government of bringing “250,000 migrants from the Middle East and Africa” into the country, adding: “The referendum is a fraud.”
The scandal in Poland broke out at a time when the Polish border is under siege by thousands of foreigners. Apparently Warsaw tried to open the border by hitting Germany directly.

WARSAW, Oct 1 (Reuters) – Hundreds of thousands of people held an opposition rally in Warsaw on Sunday, two weeks ahead of an election that the liberal Civic Platform (PO) says may decide Poland’s future in the European Union and its democratic standing.
Opinion polls suggest the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government could win the vote but may struggle to form a majority amid discontent among some over rising living costs and concern over an erosion of democratic checks and balances.
Warsaw city authorities said about a million people attended in the capital’s biggest rally on record. Public broadcaster TVP, which independent media observers say has become a government mouthpiece under PiS rule, quoted police saying about 100,000 people had joined.
Online news channel onet.pl said that according to its calculations some 600,000-800,000 people attended the rally.
Some carried banners saying “PiSexit” or “The cat can stay”, referring to the pet animal of PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
