I have given my reaction to these “coincidences” below.

Wollongong power station on fire as thick black smoke causes closure of nearby airport

Hundreds of thousands of people have been warned to stay indoors as dense black smoke from a burning electricity substation overwhelms residents south of Sydney.

A Transgrid depot at Dapto near the Tallawarra Power Station, on the shores of Lake Illawarra, burst in flames in dramatic scenes after reports of explosions ringing out.

The blaze took the Tallawarra station, which supplies up to 200,000 homes in NSW, offline for two hours.

The fire, believed to have been ignited when oil supplies caught fire, forced the closure of Shellharbour Airport 90 minutes south of Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Large Explosion, Blaze Engulfs Shanghai Petrochemical Complex

At least one person has been reported killed and more injured amid a massive fire that consumed a Shanghai ethylene glycol production plant. Large explosions were reported by eyewitnesses after a fire broke out at the plant, reportedly at around 4am local time.

Some five hours later, the Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company said firefighters were able to successfully extinguish the blaze, the cause of which is as yet unknown and under investigation.

Some residents within the city’s Jinshan district, where the plant is located, said they were forced to flee due to the thick black smoke that engulfed the whole area. Local officials said the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment is monitoring air pollutants.

Chinese state media is citing a huge emergency response to gain control of the fire. “A total of 563 firefighters and rescuers and 113 fire engines rushed to the site, and the fire is under control,” Xinhua press agency wrote.

“A nearby shop owner, surnamed Sun, told Xinhua that after hearing the explosion in the early morning, he drove his family away because they were worried about the potential fallout and pollution,” the report continued.

The company in a Saturday afternoon statement (local time) said the fire has at this point been brought “under control.”

Subsequent overhead news footage as well as social media images showed a sizeable blaze which which cause thick black clouds to linger over the city.

CNN notes that in the fire aftermath, “China has seen a spate of industrial accidents in recent years that have left scores dead, raising concerns about public safety.”

The report recalls that “In 2015, at least 173 people died after a series of explosions at a chemical warehouse in the northern port city of Tianjin.” And further, “Last October, at least three people were killed and more than 30 injured in a powerful explosion at a restaurant in the northeastern city of Shenyang. The gas explosion took place in a mixed-use residential and commercial building.”

Another US Food Processing Plant Erupts In Flames

Another food processing plant went up in flames. According to local news Stevens Point Journal, a fire ripped through a pizza-making plant in Wisconsin on Monday.

More than 70 firefighters from multiple fire departments battled a massive fire at Festive Foods in eastern Portage County that began around 0900 local time. The American Red Cross arrived on the scene shortly after to provide food and water to firefighters. They snapped two pictures of the blaze, showing flames erupting from the facility’s roof and a column of thick dark smoke pouring into the air.

While the fire seems insignificant, it’s part of a much larger issue of a spate of “accidental fires,” one by one, taking out America’s food supply chain over the past year (source of the list via The Gateway Pundit):

An allegory

Whenever I encounter these “coincidences” I think back to a small episode from Harry Potter. When Voldemart returns the Dementors are released from prison and unleash this on the non magic world.

The Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge visits the prime minister and has to explain what is going on.

He has to clarify that reports in the media that the hurricane in the West Country was not a hurricane at all; that the murdered witch, Amelia Bones was not just a middle-aged woman who lived alone; that the destruction of a bridge was done by Dementors and was not the result of technical breakdown.

This bit of allegory (intended or not), illustrates to me how events that are seemingly unconnected (and “coincidental” do in fact are in fact connected by a single strand.

Just because you can’t see the connections does not mean they don’t exist.
