Russia Says It Put Down Major Ukrainian Offensive Hours After It Began

Did Ukraine forces just attempt to kick off their much anticipated major counteroffensive, only to have it put down immediately after it began?

That’s what the Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) suggested early Monday in announcing that Ukraine began a “large-scale offensive” in mounting attacks along five sections of the frontlines in the eastern Donbas region. But Russia said it thwarted the major attack and that some 250 Ukrainian troops were killed, which included Ukraine sending six mechanized and two tank battalions to Russian-controlled southern Donetsk.

“On the morning of June 4, the enemy launched a large-scale offensive in five sectors of the front in the South Donetsk direction,” the MoD statement began. “The enemy has failed to reach its goals and was unsuccessful.”

It added that in total the attacking forces lost six tanks, three infantry vehicles, and 21 armored vehicles in what would mark a significant defeat if confirmed. “The enemy’s goal was to breach our defenses in what they assumed was the most vulnerable section of the frontline,” the Russian military statement continued.

“During the day, the occupiers made 23 attacksbut all of them were repulsed by units of the defense forces,” the MoD continued, in reference to attacks also along front lines of Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson.

The ministry further specified that Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov “was at one of the forward command posts” at the time of the thwarted attacks.

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky just days ago said that his forces stand ‘ready’ to launch a counteroffensive, he made not mention of the alleged assault Sunday night when he gave his nightly video address.

BBC has remained very skeptical of the Russian military narrative, and yet Kiev has admitted some degree of “offensive actions” Sunday into Monday:

But on Monday Ukraine issued a statement denouncing Russian ‘lies’ and propaganda that aims to demoralize and mislead the Ukrainian public, but without directly referencing the specific Kremlin claims of a thwarted counteroffensive. According to Reuters

The commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on Monday that Ukrainian forces continued “moving forward” near the long-contested city of Bakhmut in northern Donetsk. He made no comment on the counter-offensive.

The daily report from Ukraine’s General Staff said only that there were 29 combat clashes in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communications did not address the Russian statement directly but said, without providing evidence, that Russia would seek to spread lies.

“To demoralize Ukrainians and mislead the community (including their own population), Russian propagandists will spread false information about the counteroffensive, its directions, and the losses of the Ukrainian army,” it said.

Given the vague response from the Ukrainian side in the face of significant Russian claims which are currently grabbing world headlines, this for many observers is going to give credence to the Kremlin statements.

Reuters in its Monday reporting noted the following:

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov published a cryptic message on Twitter on Sunday, quoting Depeche Mode’s track “Enjoy the Silence”.

As we detailed earlier, in recent days Ukrainian officials have been openly taunting Russia ahead of the offensive.

If the Russian MoD statements prove true, this marks disaster for the Ukrainian military, given a defeat at the very start of the counteroffensive would likely sap morale and momentum, given also already there have been widespread reports that inexperienced and untrained Ukrainians are being sent to the frontlines in droves amid mounting heavy casualties.

Meanwhile, there does appear to be some degree of confirmation from Ukrainian officials trickling out that “offensive actions” have indeed begun in various sectors.

But Ukraine’s deputy defense minister is seeking to stress that Russia is putting out claims of beating back the counteroffensive in order to “divert attention from the defeat” in locations near Bakhmut.

Ukrainian counteroffensive attempt failed – Russian MOD

Ukrainian counteroffensive attempt failed – Russian MOD

Ukrainian forces attempted to mount a large-scale offensive in the southern part of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed on Monday.

In a statement, the ministry said that on Sunday, Ukrainian troops attempted to attack Russian forces using six mechanized and two tank battalions. However, it added that as a result of the actions of the ‘East’ military grouping, as well as owing to air strikes and artillery fire near the settlements of Neskuchnoye and Novodarovka, both of which are some 100km west of Donetsk, the Ukrainian forces incurred “significant losses.”

As a result of the botched attack, in the last 24 hours Ukraine has lost up to 300 service members, 16 tanks, 26 armored and 14 ordinary vehicles, the statement read. “The enemy failed to accomplish its goals,” the ministry concluded.

The ministry’s statement comes after earlier in the day it said that Ukraine had tried to break through Russian defenses in five sections of the front line in Donbass using its “strategic reserves,” but failed to do so.

Ukrainian officials have for months promised to launch a counteroffensive, which initially was expected to happen in spring. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has on numerous occasions said that Kiev was “ready” for the push but “still needs a bit more time” in order to receive more Western weapons.

Ukraine’s General Staff provided no comment on the counteroffensive, saying only that there had been 29 combat clashes in the Donetsk and neighboring Lugansk Regions in the last 24 hours. Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communications also failed to address Moscow’s statement head-on, but accused Russia of attempting to “spread false information” in order to demoralize Ukrainians.

A video showing losses suffered by Ukrainian troops in their unsuccessful attack in the south of the Donetsk People’s Republic has been released by the Russian Defense Ministry (MOD). It shows Ukrainian heavy equipment, mostly supplied by Kiev’s Western backers, being destroyed by Russian strikes during the clashes on Sunday.

The footage published by the MOD on its Telegram channel shows six Ukrainian vehicles moving through open terrain. Five of them appear to be Western-supplied Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, with the sixth resembling an armored personnel carrier or an armored fighting vehicle.

Three of the MRAPs are then shown being destroyed by Russian strikes, with one of them engulfed in plumes of gray smoke. The video also shows four more examples of heavy equipment being taken out while apparently moving along a country road.

The presentation ends with several views of Ukrainian armored vehicles and at least one tank being hit by Russian projectiles. The exact quantity of destroyed Ukrainian equipment remains unclear.

Earlier, the Defense Ministry said that a large-scale Ukrainian offensive attempt in the southern part of the Donetsk People’s Republic had been successfully repelled by Russian forces on Sunday. Ukraine fielded six mechanized and two tank battalions for the operation, the MOD stated.

The ministry reported that Kiev’s forces lost up to 300 service members, 16 tanks, 26 armored and 14 ordinary vehicles over the last 24 hours. Later, a spokesman for the Russian ‘East’ troop grouping said in a video statement that one Ukrainian mechanized brigade alone lost over 250 soldiers, 16 tanks and 24 armored vehicles, including three US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, during the botched assault.

On Monday, Ukrainian forces continued their attacks in the south of the Donetsk People’s Republic and sent three fresh battalion tactical groups supported by tanks into action, the spokesman said, adding that the Ukrainian forces’ advance attempt had been thwarted.

Kiev admitted on Monday that its troops had launched an offensive “on certain fronts.” Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister, Anna Maliar, downplayed the situation “in the south” as “local fighting.” She also claimed that the military had launched a major operation targeting the key Donbass city of Artyomovsk, known as Bakhmut in Ukraine.

Artyomovsk was captured by the Wagner private military company founded by Russian businessman Evgeny Prigozhin in late May 2023. Since then, Ukrainian forces have attempted to attack the flanks of the Russian forces holding the city. On Monday, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, described the situation in the area as “difficult” but still “under control.”

The Russian Defense Ministry has not reported on any major Ukrainian offensives in the Artyomovsk area.

Russian forces have repelled a renewed large-scale attack by Ukrainian troops in several parts of Donetsk and Zaporozhye regions, the Russian Defense Ministry said in the early hours of Tuesday, claiming that Kiev’s armed formations and military units suffered “significant losses.”

“Having suffered heavy losses the day before, the Kiev regime reorganized the remnants of the 23rd and 31st mechanized brigades into separate combined units, which continued the offensive operations close to Novodarovka and Levadnoye,” said the ministry’s spokesman, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov.

The renewed offensive mainly focused on the village of Vremevka in Donetsk Region, but was stopped by missile, artillery and heavy rocket- propelled flamethrower strikes, according to Konashenkov.

Countering the counter-offensive: What's next for the conflict in Ukraine?

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ total losses in south Donetsk direction were over 1,500 servicemen, 28 tanks, including eight German-made Leopard tanks and three French-manufactured AMX-10 wheeled tanks, as well as 109 other armored fighting vehicles,” the Russian military spokesman said.

It was unclear if the tally included the losses from Sunday’s botched attack, which was described as “large-scale” yet “unsuccessful” by the Russian military. In that attempt alone, Kiev lost more than 250 service members, 16 tanks, three infantry vehicles, and 21 armored vehicles, according to the ministry.

Some videos circulated by military bloggers on Telegram did show what appears to be several abandoned French AMX-10 light tanks, but did not include visual confirmation of the German-made Leopards lost in battle.

The Russian Defense Ministry has yet to release footage of the latest strikes on Ukrainian military vehicles. On Monday, it published a video of Ukrainian heavy equipment, supplied by the Western nations, being destroyed by Russian strikes the day before.

Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Anna Maliar confirmed that Kiev’s forces were moving to “offensive actions” in some areas, but provided no comment on the failed attacks and claimed that Moscow’s talk about the Kiev’s “counteroffensive” blunders was an attempt to to “divert attention” from its own alleged failures.

  1. It’s late. I watched the video. I haven’t read it all.
CNDNPrepper states, some silly things… NATO mercs have been fighting for years with Ukraine. Before Wagner started helping DPR/LPR.

War for ~13+ years, he seems to gloss over that. The US was in Vietnam for ~17 years… Not to mention the French war in Indo-China for year’s before. That is similar.) Ho-Chi-Minh trail bombing. In Laos and Cambodia… Plus Vietnam/IndoChina civil war for 20+-30+ years.

All MSM show the same 3-6 stories. Programming. (PressTV, RT, CCTV, France24, BBC, CBC, CNN, FOX, SKY, ABC, et al.) Check out their “headlines” every hour they have the same stories, with a twist.

CNDN Prepper sounds hyper… in 2021 Dr.s/Nurses were “jumping out window’s and off building’s/hospitals.” In Russia. Blatant cover-ups.
    Forget about Europe and Taiwan/Formosa.

    Turkish/Azeri/Kurd/Armenian/Syrian/Iraqi/Iranian/Exc. conflicts continue.
North Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Yemen/Saudi. The war’s in those places are worse and less publicized than the 2 main areas (Ukraine, Taiwan) Those area’s are still a concern.

CNDN Prepper had a video rating where I live as a 6/10 for SHTF survivability. Wrong. 2/10… Someone else local, had a large comment below refuting basically everything in that video.

C Prepper is OK. He’s sensational. But often overblown. 31:30 “The Russian’s could become a super-power again.” Dude. They are a Super-Power, their nuclear status alone… Not to mention their G# meeting’s with all major govs. before being kicked out. G7=G8.

Yeah, it’s been WW3 for over a year. According to Chinese/French gov. (Change to Military Economy) Gerald Celente and Trade Wars/Global War/World War 3.

We’ve also been in “The Last Days.” For 2000 years. Since ~90AD according to God/John. (Revelation)

    1. Bible update! 1st Peter 1:20-21 Written ~64AD.

“For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these LAST TIMES for the sake of you, who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”

Two of the Apostles, same Holy spirit, separate letter’s. 30 years apart. Still ~2000 years. But I don’t hear 1st Peter referenced, when people talk about “End days/times.”

    2. One other thing about my huge comment. I write too much.
India/Pakistan have had wars and constant border conflicts, since the inception of
“Pakistan.” They both threaten to use nukes and are constantly clashing. “End of the world” if they do nuke.

A made-up name. By 4 people in Cambridge. “Coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali, a Pakistan Movement activist, Panjab, Afghania, Kashmir, Sindh, and Baluchistan.” circa 1933. The wiki page recording, has the US NAVY, as the National Anthem performers. Ha!

Pakistan is “China Friendly and NATO Friendly.” Playing both sides of the field. (The Belt & Road+ Other Economic/Military/Industrial projects in Pakistan. VS The most recent Afghan war. [Logistics, Bases, Military/Monetary aid, Exc.])

India is anti-China, with border conflicts, also Nuclear. With a Fascistic type of government. (They have “goose-steppers” and “Modi Youth”)
Aligned seemingly with NATO but also remaining open to trade with NATO enemies.

Both wildcards. Unspoken of. Like the Burmese Genocide.
Good thing God is in control and He will determine when the world ends.
